[1]Tree Type
Select a tree type by using the right hand scroll bar until the required tree is visible in the box. Double click the left mouse button on the required type to select it and display the botanical name in the Species box. The program will then move on to the Location edit box.
Trees other than those shown are not supported by TreeAge but new tree types can be easily added in the future as data becomes available.
The tree types selectable are those currently specified in table 1a of the Forestry Commission 1998 Research note FCIN12, 'Estimating the age of Large and Veteran Trees in Britain', who are acknowledged as copyright holders.
[2]Location
Select the current text in this box and either enter new text to describe the location of the tree measured, EG. Brickfields Park, Aldershot, or modify the selection.
Upto 30 characters can be used. If there are no errors in the data the program will then move on to the Grid Reference edit box.
[3]Grid Reference
Select the current text in this box and either enter new text to describe the Grid Reference of the tree measured, EG. SU866495, or modify the selection.
Landranger, Latitude / Longitude or Ordenance Survey co-ordinates can be used. but once a co-ordinate system is chosen you should stick with it, as mixed systems may lead to confusion in the future. As this information is textual you could preface the co-ordinate a reminder EG. OS for Ordenance Survey.
Upto 30 characters can be used. If there are no errors in the data the program will then move on to the Date edit box.
[4]Measurement Date
Select the current text in this box and either enter new text to mark the date when the tree was measured, EG. 12/11/2000, or modify the selection.
Deleting the text and pressing carriage Return (or using the default 'Today') will default to today's date.
Upto 30 characters can be used. If there are no errors in the data the program will then move on to the Tree Category selection box.
[5]Tree Category
Select a tree category by using the right hand scroll bar until the required category is shown, then double click the left mouse button to select it and move on to the Measurement Units selection box.
An error "No data available for this Tree and Category type" is shown if there is no matching category for the selected tree, in this circumstance you should select the nearest suitable category.
Categories other than those shown are not supported by TreeAge but new categories can be easily added in the future as data becomes available.
The tree categories in the dialog box are those currently specified in table 1a of the Forestry Commission 1998 Research note FCIN12, 'Estimating the age of Large and Veteran Trees in Britain' who are acknowledged as copyright holders.
[6]Units of Measure
Select a Measurement unit by using the right hand scroll bar until the required unit is shown.
Double click the left mouse button to select the unit and then move on to the Stem Girth edit box.
Trees can be measured in any of the units shown and the value entered in the Stem Girth box, the value will be internally converted to a Girth in centimetres for the calculations.
The value should be valid for the unit chosen and within an equivalent range in Cm of 20cm to 3000cm.
[7]Stem girth
Select the current text in this box and either enter a new value for girth (circumference) of the measured tree, EG. 525cm.
The entered data is checked for it's format to the Units selected and that it is within a basic range of 20 to 3000cm, the value is automatically converted to centimetres.
If there are no errors in the data, some of values in the age calculation are completed and displayed, the program will then move on to the Decline Years edit box.
[8]Decline Years
Select the current text in this box and either enter a new value for the Declining Years of the tree's crown, EG. 20 years, or modify the selection.
The entered data is checked for format and that it is within a basic range of 0 to 500 years. Pressing return on the box text "Decline-years" will enter a value of 0 years.
If there are no errors in the data the final calculations for the age of the tree are displayed and the program will then move on to the Notes edit box.
[9]Notes
Enter any notes that are relevant for the measured tree, position, condition, surrounding area, Etc.
If there are no errors in the data the program will then enable the Print Results and Database buttons, these functions then become available for use.
Please Note - the current beta test version of the program DO NOT have the Print & Database Functions installed so the buttons are enabled but do not function.
[10]Species
The species for the selected Tree is displayed here on selection of the tree type.
[11]Age
Total age for the tree allowing for species, girth, crown decline, growing conditions and other factors
[12]Year Planted
The year in which the measured tree was planted. This uses the current date setting for the computer that the TreeAge program is running on, so ensure that the system date is correctly set.
[13]More
Expands the TreeAge box to show related values use in calculating the tree's age.
Clicking this button a second time will reduce the box to the original size.
[14]Print
Prints all of the values generated and entered in making the current calculation. (At this time the PRINT button is disabled whilst the routine is developed)
The data is printed in a format to suit the Assessment sheet on page 8 of the Forestry Commission 1998 Research note FCIN12, 'Estimating the age of Large and Veteran Trees in Britain'
[15]Database
Brings up the Database function of the TreeAge program so that the current measurement cam be stored for later use. (At this time the SAVE button is disabled whilst the routine is developed)
[16]Tree Age
TreeAge is a program based on the Forestry Commission 1998 Research note FCIN12, 'Estimating the age of Large and Veteran Trees in Britain'
TreeAge automatically calculates the age of a tree from data supplied by the user about the tree's condition and size, producing an estimation of the age of the tree and year of planting. The data can then be printed to a standard form and saved into a data base for later use (At this time the PRINT and SAVE buttons are disabled whilst the routines are developed).
Copyright in all data and methodologies use in the calculation of a tree age resides with The Forestry Commission who are acknowledged as the owners of the data used.
The data used is Crown Copyright and cannot be copied or passed on without this copyright notice and the copyright holders permission.
